Tropical Mood

Nesta semana de Setembro em que, inesperadamente, se faz sentir um calor quase digno dos trópicos, lembrei-me de aqui trazer um tema a condizer. "Begin the Beguine" foi mais um dos temas famosos escritos por Cole Porter (1891–1964), que o compôs ao piano no bar do Hotel Ritz de Paris. Em Outubro de 1935, faria a sua 1ª aparição pública através da voz de June Knight num musical da Broadway, “Jubilee” no Teatro imperial de Nova York. O tema viria a tornar-se um dos maiores sucessos da era do “Swing” e tem vindo a ser interpretado por inúmeros cantores de grande craveira – incluindo recentemente os REM que jogando com as palavras chamaram-lhe “Begin the Begin” no disco “Lifes Rich Pageant”. Fred Astaire e Eleanor Powell dançaram uma célebre versão instrumental no filme “Broadway Melody” (1940), Deanna Durbin cantou-o, em 1943, noutra fita (“Hers to Hold”) e, em 1946, foi a vez de Carlos Ramirez interpretar a canção na longa-metragem “Night and Day”. Curiosamente "Begin the Beguine” surge, em 1968, no filme “Yellow Submarine”, com os Beatles, durante uma conversa entre John e Jeremy. Mas para hoje escolhi uma soberba interpretação (2001) do grande pianista cubano Pepesito Reyes que, para além de ser o responsável pela linha melódica principal de “Guantanamera”, acompanhou nomes como Benny Moré, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole e Tito Puente. Com 85 anos, Reyes continuava a tocar e encantar pelo mundo inteiro com o seu estilo marcado por um sabor tropical. É difícil resistir e não dançar este tema embalado pelo ritmo caloroso do “pianar” mágico de Pepesito Reyes (“even the palms seem to be swaying…”).
